Purpose of festivals and celebrations

  • Why do you think festivals are important events in the working year?

No one can deny the fact that we are currently living in a fast-paced world in which we have to keep on working and studying hard day by day. It can be really stressful when we have to cope with so many obstacles and difficulties during our working year. And those are the reasons why festivals can’t be missed out on.They play a crucial role for people to forget about the real world for a while, relax their minds, freshen up their bodies, and spend quality time with their loved ones.

  • Would you agree that the original significance of festivals is often lost today? Is it good or bad, do you think?

Speaking from my own experience, there are several traditional festivals that are losing their original significance nowadays, especially in my country Vietnam. And to me, it’s not a good thing at all. I do think that it’s vital for everyone in general and the younger generation in particular, to keep the true spirit of these festivals alive because they have a long history and are a major part of our cultural heritage.

  • Do you think that new festivals will be introduced in the future? What kind?

This is a very interesting question. We can’t deny the fact that there are so many festivals out there in the world at the moment and they each have different purposes, such as celebrating New Year’s Eve or worshiping Gods. And because of that, I don’t think that there will be any new festivals in the future. Moreover, festivals are something that are built based on a country’s long-term traditions and customs. So, it’s not easy to create a new festival that represents the country and to have everyone enjoy it at the same time. One thing that I think will happen is that holidays will spread to places they are not traditionally from. For example, Christmas is now celebrated by some people in Vietnam even though in the past this wasn’t the case.
